AdvantEDGE® Carb Control™ vs. Shakeology®?

I had someone close to me this morning ask about AdvantEDGE Carb Control. She’s type 2 diabetic, and her doctor suggested she drink this stuff as a means to increase her protein intake without increasing her carbs. One look at the ingredients below inspired me to dig deeper and find out more about it.

The INGREDIENTS in AdvantEDGE Carb Control are Filtered Water, Protein Blend (Soy Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate, Calcium Caseinate). Less than 2% of the Following: High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Cocoa Powder (Processed with Alkali), Vitamin & Mineral Blend (Magnesium Phosphate, Potassium Citrate, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Ascorbate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Beta-Carotene, dl-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate, Niacinamide, Zinc Gluconate, Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Manganese Gluconate, Thiamin Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Biotin, Chromium Chloride, Potassium Iodide, Phytonadione, Sodium Molybdate, Sodium Selenite, Cyanocobalamin), Natural & Artificial Flavors, Cottonseed Fiber, Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Acesulfame Potassium, Sucralose, Carrageenan, and Xanthan Gum.

OK, so what about Shakeology?  In addition to digestive enzymes and prebiotics which are used to eliminate toxins and promote better absorption of nutrients, the list of Shakeology ingredients includes more than 20 free radical fighting antioxidants and phytonutrients which are vital in battling strokes, heart attacks, heart disease, and high blood pressure. It is also high in protein and amino acids, both of which are essential when it comes to building muscle.

Shakeology shakes also contain fiber, which is important for digestion and maintaining bowel regularity. It is a known fact that most Americans don’t eat nearly enough fiber on a daily basis, so drinking Shakeology is also a great way to increase the amount of fiber in your diet.

Each of the Shakeology ingredients work together to provide your body with all the nutrients it needs to function at its optimal level. Maintain a healthy body weight, protect your long-term health, support your immune system, and give your energy a boost by drinking Shakeology meal replacement shakes.

Here’s what’s inside a serving of Chocolate Shakeology:  Vitamin A (as beta-carotene), Vitamin C (as ascorbic acid), Vitamin D (as cholecalciferol), Vitamin E (as d-alpha tocopheryl succinate), Vitamin K1 (as phytonadione), Vitamin B1 (as thiamin HCL), Vitamin B2 (as riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (as niacin), Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxine HCL), Folic acid, Vitamin B12 (as cyanocobalamin), Biotin, Pantothenic acid (as d-calcium pantothenate), Calcium (as dicalcium phosphate), Iron (as ferrous fumarate), Phosphorous (as dicalcium phosphate), Iodine (as kelp), Magnesium (as oxide), Zinc (as zinc oxide), Copper (as copper oxide), Manganese (as manganese amino acid chelate), Chromium (as chromium amino acid chelate), Molybdenum (as sodium molybdate), Whey protein (isolate); PHYTONUTRIENT SUPER-GREENS BLEND: Chlorella, Spirulina, Hydrilla, Blue green algae, Spinach powder, Barley grass, Kamut grass (Triticum turgidum), Oat grass, Wheat grass (Triticum aestirum); ANTIOXIDANT SUPER-FRUIT BLEND: Acerola powder (fruit), Camu-Camu powder (fruit), Pomegranate powder (fruit), Bilberry powder (fruit), Blueberry powder (fruit), Lycium (Goji) powder (berry), Açai powder (berry), Maitake powder, Citrus bioflavonoids, Rose Hips powder (fruit); PROPRIETARY ADAPTOGEN HERB BLEND: Maca powder (root), Astragalus powder (root), Ashwagandha powder (root), Cordyceps, Reishi powder, Schisandra powder (berry), Suma powder (root), Ginko powder (leaf); PROPRIETARY NONDAIRY PREBIOTIC AND PROBIOTIC BLEND: Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) powder, Bifodobacterium longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus casei, Streptococcus thermophilus; Sacha inchi (Plukenetia volubilis) meal, Flax (seed) meal, Chia (seed) meal, Apple fiber powder, MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), Pea fiber, Quinoa (sprouted); PROPRIETARY DIGESTIVE ENZYME BLEND: Amylase, Papain, Cellulase, Lactase, Lipase, Protease, Bromelain; Amaranth (sprouted) (Amaranthus hypochondriacus), Grape seed extract (seed, 95% proanthocyanins), Green tea decaffeinated extract (leaf, 50% polyphenols). OTHER INGREDIENTS: Natural sweetener blend (non-GMO fructose, stevia), cocoa powder, xanthan gum, chocolate powder, guar gum, and cinnamon powder.

What about NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION?  At a high level, both are comparable in terms of calories and proteins. Shakeology has more sugar and fiber, and less fat:

AdvantEDGE Carb Control – 110 calories per serving. Fat, 3.0g; Carbs, 4.0g; Sugars, 0.0g; Fiber, 2.0g; Protein, 17g

Shakeology Chocolate – 150 calories per serving. Fat, 1.0g; Carbs, 17.0g, Sugars, 9.0g; Fiber, 3.0g; Protein, 18g

While I was tempted to discount Shakeology for its sugar content vs. the EAS product, digging deeper I realized that EAS puts artificial sweeteners in their shakes so they can make them sugar free. The sugar in Shakeology is NOT bad for you. Your body needs a little sugar, and Shakeology is naturally sweetened with non-GMO fructose (from fruit) and stevia plant. Also remember that Shakeology has a glycogen index rating of 24, well below the 50 recommended by the ADA.

And finally, what about the COST?

A single serving of AdvantEDGE Carb Control retails for about $2.00. Shakeology retails for $3.99/serving (email me for information on how to save $15.00 per month on Shakeology and bring the per serving cost down to $3.49). Is it more expensive, you betcha! If you’re the type of person (and I hope you are or WILL BE) who values the benefits of organic whole foods over manufactured foods that include artificial ingredients and even pesticides, then you know healthy costs a little more.  That said, is YOUR HEALTH and wellbeing worth an extra $1.50?

Considering we only have the ONE BODY that God gave us, I hope your answer is YES.  As for me, all this talk about food has got me hungry for my daily chocolate Shakeology shake!

To your good health,

Britt
